PARLIAMENT LAUNCHES DEMOCRACY CUP TO UNITE GHANAIANS

Parliament of Ghana has officially launched Democracy Cup as part of an initiative to celebrate 30 years of parliamentary democracy.

The event forms part of activities to ease tension in the country as the nation prepares towards the 2024 general elections in December, this is also in recognition of thirty years (30) of uninterrupted Parliamentary democracy in the fourth republic.

Some key football stakeholders and former black stars players graced the occasion, including: Stephen Appiah, John Mensah, John Paintsil, Fatawu Dauda, Tony Baffor and Agyeman Badu among others

Addressing the gathering, Rt. Hon. Speaker, Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, mentioned the importance of introducing the Democracy Cup tournament as a means to bridge the gap between members of parliament and the general public, particularly constituents who the MPs represent, he indicated that the move will help MPs to be accessible and visible to the good people of Ghana.
Mr. Eric Mensah Bonsu, director in charge of Finance at the ministry of Youth and Sports, represented the Minister at the occasion, he expressed joy over the introduction of democracy cup in consolidating the efforts being made to sustain peace in the country, he stated that government recognizes the importance of sports that is why a lot of money have been invested into building regional youth resource centers to develop talent.

He pledged the ministry will donate jerseys and football to support participating teams.

President of Ghana football association, Kurt E. S Okraku congratulated parliament for taking such an initiative to unite Ghanaians through football, he said there is a correlation between football and politics.

Mr. Okraku indicated that, the tournament has been sanctioned by the FA, to that effect the game will be played, he expressed excitement over how Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak have agreed to participate in the tournaments.
