The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) is demanding the immediate removal of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) Board members and the resignation of top management officials, citing the need for urgent reform and accountability in the organization’s governance and leadership.

In a statement dated July 13, the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) expressed concern that SSNIT’s decision to proceed with the sale of four hotels, despite public opposition, has eroded trust in the organization’s ability to manage funds in a transparent and prudent manner. UTAG argues that SSNIT’s disregard for public concerns has raised serious questions about their stewardship and accountability.

UTAG has called for the dissolution of the SSNIT Board and management, following the trust’s controversial attempt to sell a 60% stake in four hotels to Rock City Hotel, owned by Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong. The sale was only canceled after Organised Labour announced a nationwide strike, scheduled for July 15, in protest of the deal, highlighting the widespread opposition to SSNIT’s handling of the transaction.

The statement, signed by UTAG President Prof Mamudu Akudugu and General Secretary Prof Eliasu Mumuni, emphasized that the current leadership of SSNIT must relinquish their positions to pave the way for new leadership with a deeper understanding of the gravity of managing pension funds.

This change is necessary to restore public trust and ensure that the trust is managed with the requisite prudence and transparency, preventing similar controversies from arising in the future.
