The Toll Workers Association has expressed disappointment and frustration over the government’s plan to reintroduce tollbooths in 2025, rather than before the end of this year.

Anthony Adarkwah, a member of Toll Workers Association, spoke to Happy Kaseɛbɔ, expressing gratitude to the Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adams, for announcing the reintroduction of tollbooths during the 2024 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament on Tuesday July 23. However, he emphasized that the delayed implementation will exacerbate the current challenges faced by toll workers, who were laid off and are struggling to make ends meet.

Adarkwah criticized the Finance Ministry for not consulting the Toll Workers Association before making the announcement, leaving them uncertain about the ministry’s plans for a successful reintroduction.

He also expressed doubt about the government’s ability to address the issues that led to the initial cancellation of tollbooths, such as traffic congestion, which persists. The association’s concerns highlight the need for a more timely and consultative approach to the reintroduction of tollbooths, ensuring that the needs and concerns of toll workers are taken into account.

Anthony Adarkwah further voiced his deep disappointment with the Ministry of Roads and Highways, citing a broken promise to enroll Persons with Disabilities into the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) after the tollbooths were closed.

Despite submitting their names and necessary documents, only a few were enrolled, leaving many without employment. The dire situation has led to devastating consequences, with some members succumbing to poverty and stress.

Adarkwah passionately appealed to the Ministry to fulfill its promise and expedite the reintroduction of tollbooths, providing the much-needed employment and relief to the affected individuals.
