Kejetia Market suffers another power outage as ECG chases GH¢7m debt

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has disconnected the Kumasi City Market, popularly known as the New Kejetia Market, from the power grid due to a debt of over GH¢7 million. This action follows the market’s failure to adhere to a previously agreed-upon payment plan to settle the outstanding arrears.

A similar power outage occurred in April 2024, but was temporarily resolved after market management pledged to settle the debt. However, ECG claims that the market has since reneged on its commitment, failing to follow through on the payment plan, leading to the current disconnection.

Despite assurances from Managing Director of Kumasi City Market, Edmond Kofi Duffuor and the market’s management team that they are committed to settling the debt, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) remains unconvinced and unsatisfied with the progress made so far.

Mr Edmond is urging the Local Government Ministry to step in and resolve the ongoing electricity supply crisis, which is hindering the market’s operations. With the current reliance on generators proving unsustainable, management is seeking a permanent solution to ensure the market’s continued smooth functioning.
