The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has denounced recent remarks by Samuel Atta Akyea, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Abuakwa South, accusing him of making baseless allegations against their flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.

During a mini-rally on August 27, 2024, Atta Akyea reportedly insinuated that Mr. Mahama was a drunkard and an alcoholic.

In a statement issued on Thursday, August 29, the NDC’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, condemned the MP’s comments as “reckless and unfounded,” arguing that they not only degrade the quality of political dialogue but also reveal the desperation within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the prospect of electoral defeat looms.

The NDC commended Mahama’s exceptional qualities, lauding him as a distinguished statesman with an outstanding track record in public service.

“For the record, H.E. John Dramani Mahama is not a drunkard. He is a distinguished statesman whose commitment to the well-being and progress of Ghana is unquestionable. His track record in public service and his enduring leadership qualities speak for themselves,” part of the statement read.

The party is demanding an immediate retraction and apology from the Abuakwa South MP.

The NDC cautioned that if Atta Akyea fails to retract his statement and apologize, the party will pursue all available avenues to protect the integrity and reputation of its flagbearer.
