Editor for NewPatrioticParty.org and Deputy Director of IT for the New Patriotic Party, Stephen Forson has revealed that politicians are being held hostage by the electorate.

He explained that while many believe politicians exploit the public, it is often the electorate that takes advantage of politicians. Mr. Forson emphasized that politicians are merely a reflection of what voters demand.

In an interview with Kwadwo Safah-Danquah on the Happy Morning Show on Monday, September 2, 2024, he highlighted that if this was not the case, there would have been strong public support when President Akufo-Addo risked his presidency to fight illegal mining (galamsey). However, the
president faced opposition in every area where galamsey activities persisted during the 2020 elections.

Mr. Forson noted that illegal mining activities surged after the 2020 elections, showing that the electorate had made their preferences clear.

He argued that the issue of galamsey has moved beyond the control of political or traditional authorities.

He stressed that addressing this problem requires changing the mindset of Ghanaians, and he believes that journalists are best positioned to lead this effort and called for a concerted effort to reshape the thinking of the Ghanaian populace.
