An electoral advocacy group, Election Watch Ghana has called out the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana for allegedly attempting to manipulate the voters’ register.

According to Election Watch Ghana, they will not allow the democracy of Ghana to ever be put in doubt or let the EC undermine the country’s electoral process just to please their pay masters.

Portions of a press statement issued by the group read, “We want to make it clear to the EC that the peace of this country lies in their hands. History has shown that violence only erupts when the electoral process and final results are not satisfactory to the people, not just political parties.

“We implore the EC to put aside their selfish, partisan interests and prioritize the peace and stability of Ghana. We want the EC chair to remember that their actions have consequences and that the fate of this nation rests on their shoulders. We urge them to uphold the principles of transparency, accountability, and fairness in the electoral process, lest they face the wrath of the people”.

“We reiterate our demand for the authentic, error-free register and warn the EC that any further attempts to compromise the electoral process will be met with fierce resistance. We will mobilize the masses, use every legal avenue available, and ensure that those responsible are held accountable”.

“The era of electoral manipulation is over. Ghana deserves better, and we will fight tooth and nail to ensure that our democracy is protected.”

This response comes on the back of a statement made by Dr. Bossman Asare, the Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), who rejected the idea that the peace and outcome of the elections rest solely on the shoulders of the EC Chairperson.

His comments come amid increasing public discussions about the EC’s role in upholding electoral integrity and ensuring a peaceful process.

Speaking to journalists in Accra on Monday, Dr Asare urged the public to disregard claims, suggesting that the EC Chairperson alone is responsible for securing peaceful elections.

“The suggestion that the peace and the outcome of the election are hinged on the chairperson of the EC is completely untrue.”

“We urge the public to ignore statements even from prominent citizens that suggest that achieving peaceful elections in 2024 is somehow in the bosom of the chairperson of the EC,” he stated.

He made this comment after a senior statesman and founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, labelled the Electoral Commission (EC) as the greatest threat to Ghana’s democracy.
