19 Midwives at the Wa Municipal Hospital have been ordered to refund monies extorted from patients at the hospital. The decision was taken by management of the Hospital after a six member Committee found that staff at the maternity ward take unauthorized money from patients.

The staff in question have been asked to refund monies between GHC 4 and GHC 286. The midwives are alleged to have sold non-drug items like urine bags, pads, bed mats, gloves, urinary catheters and many more.

The Administrator of the hospital Sampson Abu, confirmed to the media that management begun investigation into the matter after receiving several allegations from their clients.

According to him, some of the staff, have been cautioned priority to the decision for them to return all monies received. He added that some of the Midwives admitted to demanding illegal fees from patients, which goes against Ghana Health Service code of conduct.
“The punishment is in accordance with the Ghana health service code of conduct, Chapter 8 sub-section 1 and 4 “
