Ranking Member on Parliament’s Lands and Natural Resources Committee, Alhassan Suhuyini has given a firm assurance that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is committed to tackling the scourge of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, head-on if the party emerges victorious in the December 7 general elections. He pledged that an NDC government would implement comprehensive and sustainable solutions to address the complex issues surrounding galamsey, ensuring that the country’s natural resources are protected and managed responsibly.

In a statement, the Member of Parliament for Tamale North, commended civil society organisations (CSOs) and labour unions for their tireless efforts to combat the galamsey menace. He assured that a government led by John Dramani Mahama would collaborate closely with these stakeholders to implement comprehensive policies, as outlined in the NDC’s manifesto, to address the economic drivers of illegal mining and the pressing need for environmental protection.

Suhuyini also lambasted the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration for its “clueless” and “pretentious” response to the galamsey crisis, criticizing their lack of effective action to tackle the issue. He emphasized that a change in government is necessary to bring about a meaningful and sustainable solution to the galamsey problem.

He further urged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his government to deliver a national address on the State of the Environment, providing a comprehensive outline of the concrete and immediate measures to be taken to combat the scourge of illegal mining and environmental degradation. He emphasized that the government has a responsibility to inform the nation about the decisive actions they will take to address these pressing issues, and that this address should not be delayed or neglected.
