The Director General of the National Lottery Authority, Sammy Awuku has refuted claims that the NLA has implemented the 10% betting tax on lottery winnings.

According to him, the NLA is yet to implement the 10% betting tax on lottery winnings, because the authority is still fashioning out the modalities for implementing.

“I don’t think any private lotto operator would tell you that they deduct the 10% because that official communication would have to come from the NLA, and then we can direct them on the modalities.”

He said “the NLA is owned by government, we contribute to good causes, we pay into consolidated funds, so we made an appeal to government and the GRA that going forward as we have discussions maybe we can have a common ground, where the NLA wouldn’t be taxing itself by the same government that owns it.”

Sammy Awuku added that, the NLA is still in talks with the GRA on the implementation modalities of the betting tax, adding that, “Whatever happens in the Casinos, in the betting arena, that is not my area but the area that I preside over as the head of Ghana’s lottery body, what I do know is up till date we have not been able to implement it because we are fashioning out the modalities”.

Speaking to the press, Mr. Awuku pointed out that, the authority has been able to register and license some companies to monitor and track records.
