The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has stated that declaring a state of emergency is not the right solution to combating illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

His remarks come in response to growing demands for the government to take stronger measures in addressing the destructive impact of galamsey across the country.

The environmental harm caused by illegal mining has raised significant concerns, prompting civil society organizations (CSOs), individuals, unions, and associations to advocate for decisive action.

Despite acknowledging the serious damage galamsey inflicts on the country’s resources, Mustapha stressed the need for more sustainable and strategic solutions rather than resorting to a state of emergency.

He pointed out that addressing the root causes of illegal mining requires a comprehensive rethink of current strategies. Mustapha warned that temporary solutions only provide short-term relief, with the issue resurfacing once public attention fades, ultimately prolonging the cycle of destruction.
