The Information Ministry has reiterated the government’s dedication to addressing the pressing issue of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey. In a statement dated October 4, the Ministry emphasized the government’s determination to collaborate with stakeholders to develop sustainable solutions to the environmental and socio-economic challenges posed by galamsey.

President Akufo-Addo’s recent meeting with Organised Labour prompted this renewed commitment. The meeting followed worker unions’ threats to strike on October 10 if immediate action wasn’t taken to halt illegal mining. The devastating impact of galamsey on water bodies, farmlands, and forest reserves has become a national concern. To combat this, the government is engaging traditional authorities, local communities, environmentalists, and mining companies to foster collaborative solutions.

The statement highlighted that, government is prioritizing sustainable mining practices that balance economic development with environmental preservation. Through its regulatory agencies, it is working on reforms to ensure that legal small-scale mining is properly monitored and that those who wish to engage in mining do so responsibly.

The Ministry recognizes building trust among stakeholders as crucial, as past efforts have been hindered by a lack of cooperation and conflicting interests.

The government urges collective action, emphasizing that combating galamsey is a shared responsibility. By working together, Ghana can protect its natural resources for future generations while promoting responsible economic activities.
