Organised Labour says government’s assurance to them concerning the crack down on illegal mining activity in the country is not enough to call off their intended strike which takes effect from Thursday October 10, 2024.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday October 7th, 2024 in Accra, the General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Joshua Ansah, reinforced the Labour Union’s commitment to press on with the strike.
Accoriding to him, they are unsatisfied with government’s response on the galamsey menace, “We are of the view that what the government has proposed does not adequately address our demands and therefore our notice of strike remains unchanged”.
Organised labour’s demands include declaring a state of emergency, revoking L.I. 2462, and deploying the military to forest areas and water bodies to combat illegal mining.
President Akuffo Addo met with leadership of Organized Labour on Thursday October 3rd, 2024 to appeal to them to call off their strike.
