Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has declared an indefinite adjournment of parliamentary proceedings. This decision follows a dramatic day in the Chamber, marked by heated disputes between Members of Parliament (MPs) from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over which caucus holds the Majority.
The contentious issue stems from Bagbin’s October 17 ruling declaring four parliamentary seats vacant, effectively shifting majority control to the NDC. The affected seats comprise two from the NPP, one from the NDC and one independent.
During the adjournment announcement, Speaker Bagbin revealed receiving a communication from the Supreme Court directing him to stay his earlier ruling. However, he refrained from elaborating on the details, leaving MPs and observers in the dark regarding the implications of the Court’s directive.
Earlier in the session, NPP MPs staged a walkout in response to escalating tensions and disagreements over the Majority designation. This dramatic exit, sparked by the NDC claiming majority status, resulted in a lack of quorum. With the minimum number of members required to conduct official business unmet, Bagbin cited this as the primary reason for the adjournment.
