The Majority Caucus in Ghana’s Parliament has initiated a recall of Parliament following Speaker Alban Bagbin’s indefinite suspension of sittings due to low attendance among Members of Parliament (MPs). This suspension has sparked controversy amid a parliamentary standoff.

The Minority Caucus insists on its majority status despite a recent Supreme Court ruling, which granted a stay of execution on the Speaker’s decision to declare four seats vacant. This ruling has further fueled the tension.

In a statement sighted by happyghana.com, the Majority Caucus formally requested a recall, citing the need to address critical government business that would be impeded by the suspension. Second Deputy Majority Whip, Alex Tetteh Djornobuah, addressed a letter to Speaker Bagbin, stating that the recall was made in good faith and aimed at serving the national interest.

In the statement, the Majority Caucus emphasized the urgency of reconvening to address pressing legislative matters, asserting that the current impasse must be resolved to facilitate effective governance. They expressed concern that prolonged delays could further stall important initiatives and undermine public trust in the legislative process.

The Caucus urged the Speaker to recall Parliament within a stipulated 7-day period, highlighting the importance of finding a timely solution to the standoff.
