The Chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Kathleen Addy, has expressed disappointment on how Ghanaians openly admit to receiving monies and other items from politicians during the election period.

According to her, there are significant gaps in knowledge and understanding of democracy citizenship and civic life among citizens, making it clear that the NCCE needs to deepen its education.

Speaking at the launch of the 2024 matters of Concern of the Ghanaian Voter, Madam Addy reiterated the National Commission for Civic Education’s (NCCE) commitment to ensure thorough public education on some thematic areas such as the Monetization of politics.

‘’This year we picked four thematic areas for our public education, the first one is monetization of politics’’.

Madam Addy emphasized, how money sharing has rapidly grown during elections, which she said has become loud as politicians openly defend that act on the media.

‘’Money in politics has become a growing trend, it used to be muted but now its very loud, everybody is doing it, politicians are doing it and giving interviews on it, citizens are demanding it, the media, and we’ve moved from matches and candles to now flat screen televisions, fridges and all manner things’’, she added.

She described the growing trend ‘‘as a threat to democracy and to the stability of the state.
