Assembly Member for the Ejire Tia Electoral Area, Kwame Agyei, has confirmed the passing of Madam Akua Donkor.

In an interview with Kwadwo Safah-Danquah on the Happy Morning Show, he acknowledged the family’s loss but found comfort in the belief that God gives and takes as He pleases and spared her from being bedridden.

A Unit Committee member and relative of the late Akua Donkor described her as the family’s backbone, always available to provide support in difficult times. He revealed that she left behind four children, along with various properties, including land, a house, and cocoa farms.

He noted that during her tenure as Assembly Member, Akua Donkor championed several developmental projects, helping bring electricity, clean water, and improved roads to the community.

News broke of her death after she sought medical care at the Nsawam Government Hospital in the Eastern Region due to respiratory issues and was later transferred to the Ridge Hospital in Accra.

Just two weeks before her death, Akua Donkor attended an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting in Accra, where she publicly expressed frustration over continuous criticism of her academic background. She felt the remarks unfairly undermined her qualification to run in the 2024 presidential elections, given that she had not received formal education.

Akua Donkor’s political career began long before founding the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) in 2011, officially registering it in 2012. Despite several unsuccessful attempts to become an Assembly Member in Kwabre, her home district in the Ashanti Region, she persisted. In 2004, she contested for the Kwabre East parliamentary seat but lost to the late Emmanuel Owusu Ansah, a former Judicial Secretary and Ashanti Regional Minister. After another defeat in 2008, she shifted her focus to the presidential race, founding GFP to advance her ambitions.

She actively pursued the 2024 presidential election and personally attended IPAC meetings. With her passing, her running mate, Kwabena Agyeman Appiah Kubi, popularly known as Roman Fada, is expected to take over the party’s campaign.
