Eric Ato Appiah Mends, popularly Known as Nana Beeyin II, the acting Gyaasehene of Nkusukum Traditional Area has been remanded by Cape Coast District Court 1 for the alleged murder of 52 year old Kwesi Mekyeawo.

Reports indicate that the incident happened when the traditional area was making preparation for their Nkusukum Odambea Festival at Mankessim on October 25, 2024.

In a ritual procession to slaughter a cow to pave way for the festival, the Gyaasehene shot the deceased when a misunderstanding ensued between different factions in the traditional area.

During the procession, some individuals associated with the Nkusukum Obaatan Division interrupted leading to some confusion. In the course of the confusion, Nana Beeyin II allegedly shot the deceased in the head, according to eyewitnesses.

After the shooting, the Chief reported himself to the Mankessim Divisional Police Command and was brought before a Judge at Cape Coast District Court 1 on October 29, 2024.

ASP Daniel Gadzo, the prosecutor, charged the chief with murder.

During the court proceedings, the prosecutor prayed for more time to investigate the matter deeply due to the nature of the case.

The court presided over by Her Worship, Anita Sheila Crabbe accepted the prosecutor’s demand and remanded the Chief till the next hearing on November 12, 2024.

The Family head of the Nkusukum Amansea Twidan, Ebusuapayin Solomon Ato Budu-Hagan condemned the action of the “self acclaimed chief” and called for justice to prevail.

The Gyaasehene of the Nkusukum Amansea, Nana Amoa I, urged the court to expedite action on the matter.
