Albert Dwumfuor, President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), has guaranteed that journalists will not encounter any restrictions from the Electoral Commission (EC) during their coverage of the December 7 elections.

He affirmed that they will have full access to all aspects of the process.

“We want to assure all journalists that they will have full access to cover the elections without any interference. The EC cannot restrict media coverage if we are to maintain transparency and accountability throughout the process” he stated.

He noted that restricting media access would compromise the integrity of the electoral process, hinder transparency, and restrict access to vital information.

“The EC must give unfettered access to the media at all levels of voting and the collation of ballots. Transparency is key to ensuring a fair process,” he added.

Mr. Dwumfuor highlighted that the GJA, in collaboration with the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), is developing a proposal urging the EC to define the media’s role in the upcoming elections.

“We are finalizing our proposal and will present it to the EC by the end of today,” he confirmed.

A memo from the Electoral Commission (EC), dated November 25, 2024, indicated that only eight media organizations would be granted accreditation to cover collation activities at the constituency level.
