The Ghana Shippers Authority (GSA) has officially launched its 50th anniversary celebrations, marking five decades of excellence and dedication to the shipping and logistics industry in Ghana.

Addressing a distinguished audience during the launch on Friday November 29, 2024 at the Marriot Hotel in Accra, the Minister for Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, hailed the Authority’s accomplishments and outlined a vision for the future under the theme, “50 Years of Excellence in Shipping and Logistics: Dedication, Innovation, and Service in the Shipping Industry.”

Reflecting on the Authority’s journey since its establishment on April 5, 1974, under NRCD 254, Mr. Asiamah commended the pioneers whose efforts laid a solid foundation for the organization.

He highlighted the pivotal role GSA has played in facilitating international trade, advocating for shippers, and fostering a conducive shipping ecosystem. He noted the Authority’s achievements, including the annual Cocoa Freight Negotiations that secure competitive freight rates for Ghana’s cocoa exports, and the development of strategic facilities such as warehouses at the Port of Tema and the Boankra Integrated Logistics Terminal.

Other accomplishments he mentioned included the construction of a freight park at Elubo to enhance cross-border trade, annual studies on port costs to inform policy, and reliable maritime trade statistics that serve as industry benchmarks.

However, the Minister acknowledged challenges faced by the Authority over decades, particularly the limitations of its establishment Act, which hinders its ability to regulate proliferating charges in the industry. In response, he spearheaded a revision of the Authority’s legal framework. The passage of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority Act, 2024 (Act 1122), he stated, represents a new era for the organization, equipping it to address longstanding challenges and adapt to the dynamic shipping landscape.

Mr. Asiamah urged GSA to embrace innovation, green shipping practices, and stronger international collaborations to ensure Ghana remains competitive in the global shipping arena. He called for sustained dedication to the Authority’s mission of ensuring fairness, efficiency, and competitiveness in the commercial shipping sector.
