GJA president condemns brutal attack on journalists in Western Region

Media Coalition Ghana, in a press briefing held today, December 7, has made demands to the Electoral Commission (EC) after issuing a warning to the EC to abandon plans of granting accreditation to only selected media houses to cover proceedings at the National Collation Center.

The coalition, comprising the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG), and New Media Association of Ghana, addressed the press at the Gifty Afenyi-Dadzie Hall of the Ghana International Press Centre.

Speaking on behalf of the coalition, the President of the GJA, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, stated that a press statement issued on Friday, December 6, 2024, calling on the EC to reconsider its decision, had been ignored. “Yesterday, we issued a press statement to the EC to reconsider their decision to give accreditation to selected media houses to cover proceedings of results collation at the National Collation Center later today,” he said.

Mr. Dwumfour emphasized that the EC’s failure to heed the coalition’s warning has prompted the group to issue specific demands.

The Media Coalition Ghana has demanded:

1. The list of media houses granted accreditation to cover proceedings at the National Collation Center.

2. The methodology used to select the accredited media houses.

The GJA clarified its commitment to maintaining a cordial relationship with the Electoral Commission while ensuring a transparent and well-organized electoral process free from misinformation and disinformation.
