The National Peace Council (NPC), in partnership with the West Africa Network for Peace-building (WANEP), has urged political parties to withdraw their supporters from election collation centres to avoid delays and ensure a smooth electoral process.
In a press release issued on December 7, 2024, NPC expressed alarm over reports of party supporters gathering at collation centres under the pretext of safeguarding ballots, Electoral Commission officials, and security personnel.
The Election Situation Room, tasked with monitoring the electoral process, described the trend as “regrettable” and cautioned that such actions could disrupt the work of electoral officers, delay the announcement of results, and escalate tensions.
NPC stressed the importance of adhering to electoral regulations, calling on political parties to allow only accredited agents to oversee the collation process.
“It is essential that political parties exercise restraint by withdrawing their supporters from the collation centres and allowing Electoral Commission personnel to carry out their duties with professionalism and integrity,” the statement read.
NPC also reaffirmed its dedication to supporting a free, fair, and transparent election and called on all stakeholders to prioritize peace during this critical period.
The council’s appeal comes amid heightened tensions in the electoral process, with concerns that unregulated activities at collation centres could undermine the credibility of the elections. Stakeholders have been reminded of their role in maintaining order and fostering trust in the electoral system.
