The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a statement expressing dismay over reports of vandalism and looting of state properties in certain parts of Ghana. These acts, which occurred on December 8, 2024, have been attributed to both disgruntled supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and overly jubilant NDC supporters following the recently concluded December 7 elections.

According to the NDC, some of the incidents involved the destruction of state-procured food items, fertilizers, and other materials allegedly intended for voter inducement by NPP parliamentary candidates. Other incidents reportedly involved NDC supporters celebrating the party’s landslide victory in both the Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

In its statement, the NDC strongly condemned these acts of lawlessness, regardless of the perpetrators, emphasizing that they undermine peace and stability. The party reiterated its commitment to the rule of law, urging Ghanaians to exercise restraint and avoid any form of mob justice or lawless retribution, which could destabilize the nation.

“We appreciate the legitimate frustration of the Ghanaian people against the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia/NPP regime,” the statement read. “However, we call on Ghanaians, especially our supporters, to celebrate responsibly and uphold accountability in governance.”

The party reassured the public of its dedication to governing in line with the rule of law and called on its supporters across all 16 regions to trust the incoming government under President-elect John Dramani Mahama. It also reminded citizens of the importance of maintaining peace as the new administration prepares to assume office on January 7, 2025.

Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the NDC’s General Secretary, signed the statement, emphasizing the need for patience and caution during this critical period.

As the NDC celebrates its victory, the party calls on the Ghana Police Service to deal with acts of vandalism swiftly and to uphold the laws of Ghana.
