The Ministry of Education (MoE) has called on the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to verify facts internally before making public statements that could mislead the public or undermine the Ministry’s efforts.

Speaking to journalists after a visit to the WAEC offices on Tuesday, Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum stated that the results of the 2024 WASSCE would be released by December 29. He noted that WAEC was finalizing the marking process and working to meet the timeline.

However, WAEC refuted the Minister’s claim, with its Head of Public Relations, John Kapi, asserting that the Ministry had not formally engaged WAEC management before giving such assurances. Kapi explained that while WAEC received a GHS 25 million cheque on December 18, no additional funds from the outstanding GHS 118 million had been disbursed, contrary to the Minister’s remarks.

In response, the Ministry clarified in a statement dated Thursday, December 26, that WAEC had formally acknowledged receipt of the GHS 25 million in a letter dated December 20, 2024 (Ref. No. HNO/GES/MOE/VOL.28/156). Subsequently, WAEC requested an additional GHS 35 million, which the Ministry honored and released.

The Ministry emphasized the importance of basing public communications on verified information and urged WAEC’s PRO to ensure internal checks are conducted before making statements that could misrepresent facts or cast aspersions on the Ministry’s initiatives.
