The People’s National Party (PNP) has commended outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the 9th Parliament of Ghana for their dedication and service to the nation over the past eight years.

Following the President’s final State of the Nation Address, the PNP, led by Chairperson Janet Asana Nabla, reflected on the achievements, challenges, and legacy of his administration, expressing gratitude for his leadership and commitment to national development.

The party in a statement on Friday, January 3, 2025, specifically lauded the government’s Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, describing it as a transformative initiative that has expanded access to secondary education for all Ghanaian children, regardless of their background. The policy, according to the PNP, has eliminated the inequities of the selective senior high school system and marked a significant milestone in Ghana’s educational landscape.

The PNP also praised the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill under President Akufo-Addo’s leadership, highlighting its importance in promoting gender inclusivity. The party noted that the legislation has created greater opportunities for women to participate actively in politics and national decision-making processes.

However, the PNP acknowledged the challenges during President Akufo-Addo’s administration, particularly the economic hardships faced by many Ghanaians. They cited the high cost of living, widespread job losses, and economic instability, which were exacerbated by global crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The party emphasized the need for both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to take collective accountability for their roles in managing the crisis and their inability to provide adequate alternative solutions.

The party has proposed a constitutional amendment to allow former Presidents and their Vice Presidents to serve as members of the Council of State. The party believes their vast experience and insights would be invaluable in guiding national development and governance.

PNP extended heartfelt gratitude to President Akufo-Addo for his service and wished him well as he transitions from active politics. They called on him to embrace his new role as a father figure for all political parties, encouraging unity and national progress.
