The Positive Transparency and Accountability Movement (PTAAM) – Ghana has petitioned the government to remove the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana, Mrs. Jean Mensa, along with her deputies.
In a letter addressed to the Office of the President, specifically to President John Dramani Mahama, PTAAM cited several discrepancies, including financial loss to the state, creation of a constitutional crisis, misconduct, and abuse of public office, as grounds for the petition.
The petition described Mrs. Mensa and her deputies as unfit for their roles due to the EC’s alleged failure to execute its mandate effectively under their leadership.
Among the concerns raised, PTAAM highlighted what they deemed poor leadership during critical incidents. They pointed to excessive spending during the COVID-19 pandemic, the disputed 2020 presidential election results, political bias, reports from international observers, and the re-collation of election results.
“The decision to undertake a new voters’ registration and exhibition exercise during the COVID-19 pandemic was reckless and avoidable. This move, allegedly aimed at favoring President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the 2020 general elections, risked the lives of 30.2 million Ghanaians,” a section of the letter stated.
The Positive Transparency and Accountability Movement -Ghana expressed confidence that President Mahama, acting on this petition, would restore public trust in the Electoral Commission. They believe such action would reaffirm Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy in Africa.
