End post-election chaos: IDEG and CFI urge immediate reforms

End post-election chaos: IDEG and CFI urge immediate reforms

The Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG) and the Civic Forum Initiative (CFI) have praised Ghana for reaffirming its democratic credentials through the peaceful inauguration of a new president and parliament following the December 2024 general elections.

In a joint press statement, the organisations expressed concern over the tense and chaotic re-collation of parliamentary results in nine constituencies, particularly highlighting the unresolved situation in Ablekuma North. They warned that such incidents, if left unaddressed, could pose significant risks to the country’s political stability and security.

To prevent future occurrences, IDEG and CFI urged law enforcement agencies, especially the Attorney General’s Department and the Ghana Police Service, to take decisive action against such lawlessness. They also called on political parties to collaborate with the Electoral Commission to address tensions and delays related to the collation of election results.

They further appealed to key stakeholders including political party leaders, civil society organisations, the media, traditional and religious leaders to intensify public education on transitional arrangements to ensure peaceful conduct during post-election periods.

IDEG and CFI reaffirmed their commitment to working with stakeholders to promote dialogue, strengthen civic education, and support transformational reforms for national unity and stability.
