Minister-designate for Labour, Jobs, and Employment, Rashid Pelpuo, has vowed to take decisive action against child labour in Ghana, ensuring that children are removed from workplaces where they do not belong.

During his vetting in Parliament on Thursday, January 30, he reaffirmed his commitment to enforcing existing policies aimed at eliminating child labour. He highlighted that the ministry already has a structured approach to addressing the issue, which aligns with the national strategy to protect children from exploitation.

Mr. Pelpuo assured that he would thoroughly assess the Ghana Accelerated Action Plan against Child Labour, emphasizing that rather than creating a new framework, he would focus on reviewing and strengthening the existing policy where necessary. He stressed the importance of full implementation to achieve meaningful results.

He also underscored the need for strict enforcement of the country’s labour laws, which prohibit child labour.

He noted that children should not be seen as young adults but as individuals who must be given the opportunity to grow and develop into responsible adults. He condemned the practice of subjecting children to physically demanding tasks when they should be focused on learning and personal growth.
