The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has expressed confidence that its meeting with the Transport Ministry will provide an opportunity to address key challenges facing the union.
The Ministry of Transport is set to meet with transport unions today, February 11, 2025, to discuss proposed fare increases in response to the continuous rise in fuel prices.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with happyghana.com, Deputy National Communications Officer for GPRTU , Samuel Amoah, expressed gratitude to Transport Minister Joseph Nikpe Bukari for arranging the meeting to hear their concerns.
He emphasized that discussions with the ministry would allow for a deeper conversation on the rising cost of fuel, which is significantly impacting their operations as transport service providers.
Mr. Amoah also noted that the union would seek further clarification on the planned reintroduction of road tolls. Since the ministry has announced that the toll collection system will transition to a digital format, he stressed the need for proper briefing so that drivers can be adequately informed and prepared.
“The main agenda for today’s meeting is to officially welcome the sector minister as he begins his tenure, this meeting is not intended for discussions on transportation fares. However, when the opportunity arises for further dialogue, we will seek to understand the ministry’s vision for the transport sector, particularly regarding the frequent rise in fuel prices and the reintroduction of road tolls,” he said.
While acknowledging that several pressing issues need attention, Mr. Amoah stated that the primary purpose of today’s meeting is to officially welcome the sector minister and deliberate on key concerns affecting the transport industry.
