Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and a team of experts have visited Wa in the Upper West Region, to gather firsthand information and assess the ongoing meningitis outbreak in the area.

Out of the 42 confirmed cases in the region, 10 have unfortunately resulted in death. Health officials remain on high alert as the outbreak intensifies, with all affected individuals receiving free treatment. Prior to the Minister’s visit, a delegation had already been sent to evaluate the situation in the region.

Mr. Akandoh explained that the ministry has put together a program to ensure the containment of all diseases. He mentioned a meeting was held to evaluate the country’s preparedness, with external partners coming in to assess the progress made. He expressed hope that progress is being made noting that authorities will need to connect with the people in the affected communities to assess the situation.

The public is advised to stay hydrated and maintain proper body moisture, as dry weather conditions make the country vulnerable to seasonal outbreaks of cerebrospinal meningitis starting this month.

The Minister is expected to appear before Parliament next week to provide an update on the disease’s status in the country
