The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced the country’s preparedness to manage and control the spread of meningitis.

Speaking during a media briefing following his visit to the Upper West Region to provide a situational update on meningitis, the minister noted that there have been no recorded deaths concerning the disease over the past week.

He expressed optimism about the readiness of healthcare professionals.

According to the Minister, the Ministry has reported approximately 94 suspected cases of meningitis, out of which around 20 have been confirmed, including 14 deaths.

Mr Akandoh also mentioned that healthcare facilities in the affected regions have been supplied with essential medical resources, including antibiotics and vaccines, to facilitate prompt treatment for those infected.

The Minister also visited the Nadowli District Hospital, where meningitis cases are being treated.

The Health Minister appealed to the media to use their platform to educate the public on the importance of reporting early to health facilities for treatment.

He urged the public to seek immediate medical attention if they experience early symptoms of meningitis, such as severe headaches, fever, and neck stiffness, by visiting the nearest health center.

He expressed confidence in the readiness of healthcare professionals to manage the outbreak effectively.

He assured the public that the Ministry of Health is committed to providing the necessary support and resources to contain the spread of meningitis and protect the health of Ghanaians.
