The Mobile Money Advocacy Group Ghana (MoMAG) has called on President John Dramani Mahama to look into adequate security measures to protect mobile money agents through the interior and defence ministries.

According to them, the mobile money industry has lost numerous agents to barbaric acts of robbery and killing over the past years.

“Regardless of our contributions to the economy, subsequent governments have shown little concern for our safety”, they noted.

Addressing the media at a press conference, the national secretary for the association, Amoako Atta stated that some of their agents who have been robbed include one momo agent at kasoa who lost over GHC 30,000 through robbing on January 27, 2025 at 7:40pm.

Another agent was robbed at gunpoint at spintex HFC Estate with GHC 45,000 stolen on February 19, 2025, between 8:30-9:00pm.

Other incidents include two momo agents who lost their lives at Krofrom in the Ashanti Region on January 13, 2025, and Nkrankwanta in the Bono Region on January 19, 2025.

“The aforementioned incidents highlight the urgent need for government intervention to ensure the safety and security of mobile money agents”, he emphasized.

The National Secretary further advised mobile money agents to prioritise their own safety while they are still waiting for the government to provide adequate security. .

“To minimise risk, we advise mobile money agents across the country to close their shops by 6:00pm daily, avoid sensitive financial information over the phone in public places, install CCTV cameras at their shops to enhance security and should not fight back when robbers attack them”.
