Member of Parliament for Dormaa West, Vincent Oppong Asamoah has indicated that the 10% tax placed on returns for bet stakers as implemented by the past NPP administration are to be handled by betting companies and not the stakers.
The NDC MP in an engagement with happyghana.com ahead of the 2025 budget reading today in Parliament noted that the decision of the Mahama-led government to scrap these taxes speaks volumes about President Mahama’s commitment to easing the financial burdens of Ghanaians. “…as far as the NDC promised to scrap this tax, we must ensure it is taken off.” he said.
He noted that the introduction of the betting tax by the erstwhile government was to be handed to the betting companies rather than tax stakers who are heavily affected by the deductions made on their wins. “The taxes should be given to the betting companies not the people who have staked and won their bets. There should be a very nice way to make this possible so that the stakers attain what they deserve.”
Earlier reports made by happyghana.com indicate that the Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu affirmed the government’s commitment to scrapping the betting tax along with other levies introduced by the immediate-past NPP government. The way forward will be disclosed to Ghanaians by Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson as he presents the budget today.
