The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has applauded the Ghana Police Service for arresting a suspect in connection with the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.

The suspect, Daniel Owusu Koranteng, also known as Amakye, was arraigned before the Madina District Court on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, and remanded in police custody to reappear on April 1, 2025.

The GJA in a statement issued by the General Secretary, Kofi Yeboah on Thursday, March 20, acknowledged the efforts of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno and Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor for their role in making this breakthrough.

According to the GJA this marks the first significant progress in the case since Suale was assassinated on January 16, 2019.

While commending the police, the GJA urged them to continue their efforts to arrest other suspects involved in the murder.

The association reaffirmed its commitment to seeking justice, noting that the delay in solving the case has negatively impacted Ghana’s ranking on the World Press Freedom Index.

The GJA also reminded the police of its earlier ultimatum to escalate the case to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice if no progress was made by the end of March 2025.

“We shall also demand from the Police updates on investigations into the many cases of assault against journalists that have gone cold, including Latif Iddrisu’s case which we had also earmarked for presentation to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice,” part of the statement read.

Additionally, the GJA has informed international partners, including the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), who have pledged to push the case onto international platforms.
