The Minority in Parliament has accused the Attorney General, Dominic Ayine of abusing his office by personally directing raids, arrests, and investigations targeting former government appointees.

They argue that his actions exceed his constitutional mandate and threaten the integrity of the justice system.

Addressing a press conference on Monday, March 24, Second Deputy Minority Chief Whip, Jerry Ahmed Shaib emphasized that the Attorney General’s role is to provide legal advice to investigative bodies and support the courts in delivering justice.

However, he asserted that recent developments indicate a shift where the Attorney General is personally driving investigations, determining guilt, and attempting to influence court proceedings.

According to him, this approach compromises the fairness of the judicial process and sets a dangerous precedent for the rule of law in Ghana.

He stated that the Attorney General’s involvement in investigations creates bias from the onset, as he is expected to be a neutral officer of the court rather than a lead investigator.

The Minority has called for an immediate end to this practice, urging all well-meaning citizens to speak against what they describe as a political witch-hunt.

They argue that the courts, and not the Attorney General, should be the sole arbiters of guilt or innocence in any legal matter.

They warned that the Attorney General’s approach risks eroding public confidence in the justice system, as it promotes trial in the court of public opinion rather than through due legal processes.

The Minority insists that such actions threaten Ghana’s democratic principles and must be halted immediately.
