President John Dramani Mahama has announced an allocation of 6.7 billion Ghana cedis to the Ghana Armed Forces to address food crisis that could have affected them due to an outstanding debt of GH₵275 million owed it food suppliers since August 2023.

Speaking at the Jubilee House after a visit from the Chief of Defence Staff, Major General William Agyapong, and other Service Chiefs, President Mahama assured the military leadership that the Ministries of Finance and Defence are collaborating to settle current bills and implement strategies to clear the outstanding debts.

“This year, we have allocated over 6.7 billion Ghana cedis to the Ministry of Defence and the Ghana Armed Forces. As we turn the economy around, you can rest assured that your budgetary allocation will further increase to secure new platforms and assets to enhance your operations”.

Acknowledging the Armed Forces’ debt burden of approximately GH₵3.7 billion, the President expressed confidence in modernizing and expanding the military through innovative financing and strategic planning.

He emphasized the government’s commitment to resolving the food crisis and highlighted the role of the Defence Industries Holding Company Limited in enhancing Ghana’s agricultural development.

“The disciplined workforce and strategic land holdings of the Ghana Armed Forces can help enhance food security in the country,” he noted.

President Mahama also urged the military to explore innovative solutions to improve infrastructure and training, particularly troop accommodation.
