PUWU calls for direct dealings between top management and suppliers

The Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) of TUC Ghana has called for direct dealings with suppliers following a recent exposé uncovering the hoarding of 40 out of 1,350 containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

According to a statement released by PUWU, the discovery made last week by the Ministerial Investigative Committee, was unsurprising, given the numerous procurement issues identified in earlier discussions between the committee and the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor.

“Among the key concerns raised with the committee were procurement issues and excessive government interference in the company. Therefore, PUWU was not surprised when the Ministerial Investigative Committee uncovered significant procurement and clearing violations.”

The statement, signed by PUWU’s General Secretary, Timothy Nyame, emphasized that dealings with suppliers should involve direct engagement with ECG’s top management to ensure value for money. “We have suggested that top management enter into procurement agreements with suppliers who can deliver goods directly to the agreed locations.”

PUWU commended the Ministerial Committee for its efforts in uncovering the missing containers and urged that all those found culpable be sanctioned.
