A group identified as Temporary Workers of the Electoral Commission has appealed to the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) to pay them the allowances owed for their services during the 2024 General Elections.

The group consists of individuals who are not permanent staff of the Commission but were engaged to ensure the smooth conduct of the elections. They worked as Presiding Officers, Biometric Verification Officers (BVOs), and other temporary positions crucial to the electoral process.

In an exclusive interview with Happyghana.com, Ernest Kwakye, a member of the temporary staff, expressed disappointment that months after the December 2024 elections, they have received no communication from the EC regarding when their allowances will be paid.

He noted that in previous elections, payments were typically made by January, but this time the delay has been unusually long, with the Commission remaining silent on the issue.

Mr. Kwakye also mentioned that a WhatsApp platform that had been created for communication between the Commission and temporary staff has gone silent since the elections concluded, leaving workers in the dark.

“Election was held in December, and usually by January, the allowances are paid. But this time around, no one is saying anything about when we’ll be paid. Even the WhatsApp platform that was created for us to receive updates from the Commission has gone silent, and we haven’t heard anything from anyone,” he said.

He emphasized that as temporary workers, they made personal sacrifices and took risks to serve their country, and therefore urged the Electoral Commission to honor its obligation by paying them their due allowances.
