NDC Now Holds Two-Thirds Majority, But Will Not Abuse It - Majority Leader

Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has condemned the violent clashes between the youth and law enforcement officers in Bawku.

The disturbances, which led to fatalities, injuries, and the vandalization of his private residence, have heightened concerns about growing tensions in the area.

In a statement released on Friday, April 11, while on assignment abroad, Mr. Ayariga expressed deep concern over the loss of lives and the attempted burning of his home.

The MP attributed the unrest to growing frustration among the youth regarding the slow progress in resolving the long-standing chieftaincy dispute in Bawku, as well as alleged misconduct by some law enforcement officers.

Despite the turmoil, he reaffirmed his support for a peaceful resolution through legal and constitutional means.

He encouraged residents to remain calm and to maintain positive relations with security personnel to safeguard peace and order in the area.

Mr. Ayariga expressed confidence in the mediation efforts being led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and supported by other traditional leaders including the Overlords of Kusaaug and Mamprugu, as well as the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.

He emphasized the need to adhere to existing laws and respect judicial rulings in addressing the chieftaincy issue.

He also dismissed accusations and misinformation being spread by political opponents, describing them as attempts to exploit the crisis for electoral advantage. Ayariga stated that he remains focused and unshaken by the smear campaign.

He assured the people of Bawku and Kusaaug of his dedication to achieving a lasting and peaceful resolution and called for unity and patience during this critical period.
