President John Dramani Mahama has officially launched the Feed Ghana Programme, a flagship government initiative designed to enhance local food production, reduce the nation’s reliance on food imports, and generate employment within the agricultural sector.

The launch which took place on Saturday, April 12, in Techiman, the capital of the Bono East Region. In his address, President Mahama detailed the programme’s core components, emphasizing its focus on engaging institutions particularly Senior High Schools in commercial agriculture.

He highlighted that the programme’s first pillar promotes the establishment of backyard and community gardens.

The President encouraged households to cultivate vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, and garden eggs to boost nutrition and cut down on household food expenses. He drew parallels with Ghana’s historical Operation Feed Yourself campaign, reminding citizens of its benefits.

The second key area of the initiative targets institutional farming. He stated that schools and other institutions with access to land will be supported to undertake crop and livestock production.

“We want to empower households and communities to become more self-reliant, at the same time, we’re engaging Senior High Schools and institutions with available lands to take up farming as a productive venture,” he said.

He added that several institutions have already expressed strong interest in participating in the programme, signaling broad national support for the initiative.
