The Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC), Duncan Amoah, has urged the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) to reverse its recent decision to increase utility tariffs.
According to Mr. Amoah, stakeholders within the industry are prepared to strongly oppose the hikes should the government fail to reconsider its stance.
The PURC recently announced an upward adjustment in utility tariffs, with electricity rates rising by 14.75% and water tariffs increasing by 4.02% across all consumer categories. This revision is part of the Commission’s quarterly tariff review for the first and second quarters of 2025.
The Commission attributed the increases to several factors, including the cedi-dollar exchange rate, inflation forecasts, fuel prices especially natural gas and the current hydro-thermal power generation mix.
However, Duncan Amoah maintains that the tariff hikes are both unjustifiable and unreasonable.
