The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced plans to expand its free dialysis programme to improve access to life-saving treatment for renal patients across Ghana.

As part of the initiative, the NHIA will procure additional dialysis machines and essential consumables for healthcare facilities throughout the country.

This expansion forms part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance access to critical healthcare services.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of the NHIA, Dr. Victor Bampoe, the programme aims to accommodate more patients with kidney conditions under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

He noted that the free dialysis initiative, which began under the previous government, currently operates in 20 centres nationwide.

Dr. Bampoe emphasized the need to expand and sustain the programme through reliable funding, with the goal of integrating dialysis treatment into the NHIS as a standard healthcare benefit.

This move is expected to significantly reduce the financial burden on patients and their families, many of whom struggle with the high cost of dialysis treatment in Ghana.
