The Seventh-day Adventist Church, Southern Ghana Union Conference, has expressed strong support for the upcoming National Sanitation Day declared by the Government of Ghana, while announcing an alternative date for its members to participate in the nationwide initiative.

In a statement posted on the Church’s official Facebook page, the leadership acknowledged the importance of the government’s move to designate Saturday, May 3, 2025, as National Sanitation Day, a step they described as a “commendable effort to promote cleanliness and environmental responsibility across the country.”

However, the Church noted that the scheduled date coincides with the Sabbath, a sacred day of rest and worship observed by Seventh-day Adventists.

“As a church, we fully support this initiative, recognizing that cleanliness is indeed part of godliness and aligns with our health message. However, since the scheduled date falls on the Sabbath, we will not be able to participate in the national activity on that day,” the statement read.

To maintain their religious observance while contributing to the national cause, the Church has directed all local congregations across Ghana to hold their own community clean-up exercises on Sunday, May 4, 2025.

“This will serve as both our contribution to the national cause and a practical demonstration of our faith in action,” the Church stated.

The Southern Ghana Union Conference’s decision reflects a balance between religious conviction and civic responsibility, highlighting the Church’s ongoing commitment to public health and environmental stewardship.
