Government is preparing to launch its chip-embedded polycarbonate passport on April 28, 2025, marking a significant advancement in document security and efficiency.

The announcement was made by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa during a media briefing, where he emphasized the government’s commitment to modernizing passport services.

The new passport, according to the minister, features over 100 advanced security elements, including nanotechnology and micro Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chips, making it virtually impossible to forge.

The Minister during the media briefing mentioned that, the biographical data page will be constructed using multi-layer compressed polymer (polycarbonate), ensuring durability and protection against fraudulent activities.

He indicated that, the rollout forms part of a broader passport reform initiative, which includes:
1. Decentralization of passport services to all 16 regions, thereby reducing travel burdens for applicants

2. Integration with the National Identification Authority (NIA) to streamline verification using Ghana Card details.

3. Introducing an e-tracking system to keep applicants informed about their passport status.

4. A 30% reduction in passport fees, lowering the cost of a 32-page passport from GH¢500 to GH¢350 (pending parliamentary approval).

5. A 24-hour passport service with door-to-door delivery, ensuring secure and efficient distribution.

Ablakwa assured citizens that existing passports remain valid until 2030, allowing holders to transition at their convenience.

He also declared an end to middlemen and unofficial agents, urging applicants to engage directly with official channels to avoid exploitation.
