The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has called for strict adherence to constitutional principles as the process to determine the fate of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo unfolds.

This follows petitions submitted to President John Dramani Mahama, which led to the suspension of the Chief Justice pending investigation.

GBA emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring that all actions align with the 1992 Constitution.

In its statement, the Association highlighted Article 146(6) and (10), which outline the constitutional process for the removal of a Chief Justice.

“It is the hope and belief of GBA that the actors involved in the whole process would have the time-tested tenets of the Rule of Law as their guiding principles,”.

The Association also urged all stakeholders, regardless of their role, to exercise discretion in line with Article 296, ensuring that their actions safeguard the independence and integrity of the judiciary.

“Justice emanates from the good people of Ghana and is administered by the Judiciary headed by the Chief Justice,”the GBA statement added, reaffirming its commitment to defending the judiciary’s independence.
