The Suhum Government Hospital in the Eastern Region is urgently appealing for support to expand and properly equip its Accident and Emergency (A&E) Center. The facility is under intense pressure due to the high number of road traffic accidents on the busy Accra-Kumasi highway.

The hospital’s Medical Superintendent, Dr. Ahmed Tijani Sulemana revealed during a recent engagement that the A&E center is critically undersized and lacks the necessary equipment to manage the increasing number of trauma cases.

He highlighted that this shortfall is placing both patients and healthcare workers under severe stress.

The facility currently operates without basic yet essential emergency tools, including electrocardiogram (ECG) machines, cardiac monitors, and other key diagnostic equipment. In addition to infrastructure and equipment challenges, the hospital also faces difficulties related to health insurance. Dr. Sulemana noted that many patients arrive without National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cards, complicating the delivery of care and cost recovery.

The Member of Parliament for Suhum Constituency, Frank Asiedu Bekoe also known as Protozoa underscored the need for an immediate upgrade of the A&E center.

Speaking during a community clean-up exercise at the hospital, organized in collaboration with the Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) Church, he stressed that Suhum’s central location along the Accra-Kumasi highway makes it a frequent emergency stop for accident victims.

He also encouraged community-driven efforts to support the hospital’s development and improve emergency healthcare delivery in the region.
