Government has unveiled its landmark initiative, The Blackstar Experience, a bold and dynamic movement aimed at rebranding the country’s cultural, arts, and tourism industries.

The launch, which took place on May 1, 2025, at the iconic Freedom and Justice Monument at Blackstar Square, marked the beginning of a nationwide effort to redefine Ghana’s identity and position it among the world’s top cultural destinations.

The event, attended by government officials, creative industry stakeholders, and international dignitaries, underscored Ghana’s ambition to align its brand reputation with 20 of the world’s most esteemed country brands.

According to Rex Owusu Marfo, the Coordinator of the Blackstar Experience, this project goes beyond tourism; it is a movement of cultural reawakening.

“Ghana has long been celebrated for its hospitality, history, and dynamic cultural expressions—from the rhythmic beat of its music to the captivating stories of its ancestors. The Blackstar Experience invites the world to feel the soul of Ghana”.

The Experience is structured around seven key pillars: cinema, audio, cuisine, aesthetics, style, literature, and heritage.

These elements, he mentioned would be incorporated into national initiatives across various sectors to amplify Ghana’s image as Africa’s cultural capital.

In her remarks, Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, reinforced the need for substantial investment in the creative economy.

“Usually, we are at the bottom of the pile when the money is being shared. Bring us into the middle and see the magic we will bring”.

As part of the initiative’s roadmap, Ghana will foster international collaborations, including a partnership with Atlanta’s Blackstar Week, establish a multimillion-dollar film studio dubbed Ananse Studio, and curate yearly cultural highlights such as Ghana Music Week, Creative Connect, and Detty December.

President John Dramani Mahama, who was present at the launch, expressed his unwavering commitment to the project.

“The tourism, arts, and culture sectors have always had my heart. We are committed to positioning this industry on a higher pedestal”.

The Blackstar Experience is set to become a year-long celebration, integrating entertainment, artistic, and educational disciplines, while attracting global investors and visitors. As Ghana embarks on this transformative journey, the world eagerly awaits the unfolding of this grand cultural renaissance.
