The Accra Metropolitan Health Directorate is encouraging residents to make regular use of treated mosquito nets in a renewed effort to curb the rising incidence of malaria among children and adults.

Speaking on Happy 98.9 FM’s Happy Morning Show with Fati Shaibu-Ali on Friday, May 2, 2025, Senior Health Promotion Officer Gladys Opuni Kumi emphasized that the Directorate is intensifying its campaign in response to an increase in malaria cases within the metropolis.

Ms. Kumi noted that the distribution of mosquito nets is targeted at vulnerable communities, especially areas such as Agbogbloshie, Kantamanto, and Kokomba, where many people sleep outdoors or in front of shops. In these settings, mosquito nets can significantly reduce the risk of mosquito bites and subsequent malaria infections.

She acknowledged that some individuals are reluctant to use mosquito nets, citing discomfort due to heat and concerns about skin irritation. However, she advised that new nets should be aired out in a shaded, well-ventilated space for at least three days before use to minimize any potential skin reactions.

The free distribution of mosquito nets for registered individuals will run from Friday, May 2 through Tuesday, May 6. Ms. Kumi cautioned recipients not to pay any fees at the collection points.

In addition to using mosquito nets, Ms. Kumi urged residents to maintain a clean environment by regularly clearing gutters, tidying living spaces, and removing overgrown vegetation to reduce mosquito breeding grounds.
