‘Dumsor Promax’: Where is the Energy Minister? – Afenyo-Markin demands answers amid power crisis

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has criticized President John Dramani Mahama’s administration, accusing it of plunging Ghana into darkness within just 120 days of taking office.

At a press conference themed “120 Bitter Days of John Dramani Mahama”, held on Thursday, May 8, 2025, at the party’s headquarters in Accra, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin condemned the current administration for reintroducing the power crisis, commonly referred to as “Dumsor”, just months into their term.

He reminded the public that President Mahama had previously promised to resolve Ghana’s electricity problems, criticizing past administrations for their failures yet has only worsened the situation.

According to Afenyo-Markin, the crisis has now intensified, describing it as “Dumsor Promax.”

He emphasized that while the NPP inherited a power crisis during their term, they made significant efforts to stabilize the situation before leaving office. He accused President Mahama of misleading Ghanaians by promising a permanent solution to the power challenges, a promise that has not been fulfilled.

Afenyo-Markin also took aim at Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor, questioning his conspicuous silence in the face of the ongoing crisis. He rhetorically asked where the Energy Minister was, as the nation struggles with worsening blackouts.

Highlighting the impact of the crisis, he noted that businesses are suffering due to reduced productivity, and hospitals are in distress without reliable electricity to support essential services. He stressed that the energy situation has become a national emergency.

Afenyo-Markin accused the Mahama-led administration of offering excuses instead of solutions. He stated that leadership is about taking action, not lamenting. He urged the government to fulfill its promises and address the energy crisis head-on.
