Rotational Nurses and Midwives issue one week ultimatum to govt over unpaid allowances

The Rotational Nurses and Midwives Association of Ghana has issued an ultimatum to the government, demanding immediate action over the prolonged delay in disbursing their allowances.

At a press conference in Accra, National President Ebenezer Boateng expressed deep frustration, citing what he described as “systematic neglect” by the Ministry of Health, leaving hundreds of rotational health workers unpaid for nearly a year.

“We’ve worked tirelessly since May 2024 without financial clearance, depriving us of our rightful allowances. This neglect has persisted for more than four years, and we can no longer remain silent”.

The financial hardship has reportedly had devastating consequences.

Boateng revealed that five rotational nurses and midwives have tragically passed away due to extreme stress and inability to afford essential needs.

Additionally, six others are suffering from chronic illnesses but cannot access proper medical care due to the unpaid allowances.

In response, the association has given the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Finance a one-week ultimatum, equivalent to 14 working days to resolve the issue. Their demands include:

– Immediate financial clearance for all rotational nurses and midwives, including newly posted colleagues.

– Timely payment of accumulated allowances, to be completed within 14 days of receiving clearance.

Boateng warned that failure to meet these demands could result in escalated action.

“Our ability to provide quality healthcare is being severely undermined. The government must act swiftly—not just for us, but for the patients who depend on us every day.”
